PPTP Client to VPN Provider

Post by sidewinder » Tue Nov 04, 2014 1:18 am

Hi All,

I am pretty new to this so please be patient with me.

I have just got a new Billion 7800DX and have it setup at home. It is running fine with my ADSL2+ connection so far has been great.

I have setup an L2TP/IPSEC server and I can VPN into my home network from work with no trouble and it is all working well.

I am trying to setup a VPN with a provider in the USA to allow me to connect through and use some of the services not available in Australia but I am having issues connecting.

I have been using PureVPN but my trial has run out with no joy. Has anyone been using a service like this with a 7800DX? Is there one that can be recommended that works and what setting should I use for the PPTP client?

Thanks in advance for any help.

I just ran some quick tests with pptpvpn.org using their US servers and everything is fine, (see the attached screen shots of my config setup and me visiting whatsmyip.org) I had to set manual DNS servers before settings up the PPTP client

Maybe you can try the same setup

I hope this helps :D

Thanks for the quick reply.

I setup a VPN to PPTPVpn.org as you suggested and it worked perfectly. No trouble connecting at all so I know it all works now!

The PPTP client needs an IP Address instead of a URL to connect so I suspect that the IP I am using for the PureVPN server is not right for this. I tried to ping the URL but keep getting timeouts and it seems to be different everytime. I have requested an IP address I can use from PureVPN.
If they come back with it today I will give it a go and post on progress.

Thank you very much for the help.

I am still having trouble with my PureVPN connection although the PPTPVPN one is working fine.

I thought I would post a copy of the log file to see if there was anything in there. I have a funny feeling it is an authentication problem so have requested they confirm my user name and password. There is also a Non-zero Async Control Character Maps are not supported! error which I am not sure of.

Here is the log anyway,
Thanks

It does seem it might be a authentication error

Did you ever find a solution to this problem?

I am currently in the trial period for services with TorGuard and ExpressVPN (both have cancellation periods 7 and 30 days respectively). I have managed to connect to TorGuard proxy servers which supply an ip address, but neither of the providers listed will allow me to connect via their listed server name as opposed to IP address as the 7800DX requires an ip address as opposed to an server name.

Ping their server name and you will see the corresponding ip address.
