8800nl r2 ethernet port speeds

Post by telecomsconsortium »

Hi according to Zcomax, the Billion 8800nl R2 has:

4-port 10/100/1000Mbps switch and 1-port WAN Gigabit port

reference: https://www.zcomax.co.uk/8800nlr2.html

Is this a mistake as I have never been able to connect faster than 100Mbps on any of the yellow ports?

The blue EWAN port is the 1 gigabit port (that can be used as a normal ethernet port, when a EWAN/Ethernet WAN interface is not added), this was a mistake on the listing now resolved.

If I plug my gigabit network switch into the EWAN Blue port - will this function just as the other LAN ports do - with all the same features/security etc. but connecting at 1 gigabit instead of 10/100?

To be clear I am using Sky Fibre at the moment so would be using the RJ45 interface for Sky connection to phone line.

My ER110 modem features gigabit mode to my switch -this is why I am asking if this unit can do the same in above mode - ie. achieve LAN gigabit on this one port?

thanks.

Yes the EWAN port is 1000mbps, as long as the device has not been configured for a Ethernet WAN connection the port can be used as a standard gigabit Ethernet port.

Fantastic. Just exactly what I need then.
My new 8800 comes tomorrow and can't wait to dump the Sky router at last! Got my fibre username etc anyway ready to go..
I just wanted that one gigabit port to connect to my gigabit switch and thats all done.

thanks

I Switched my Sky router for an 8800NL, primarily in order to get greater flexibility on NAT in order to forward external ports to my internal web server, Plex server etc.

HOWEVER, I have found that the real world throughput is actually worse than the Sky router. With Sky router in place, I get between 52 and 55Mbps downstream when running a speedtest to an ethernet connected PC; I run at different times of day etc. With the 8800NL, I get more like 46Mbps downstream which is quite a difference.

I have stuck with the 8800NL as I want the added flexibility not afforded by most of the ISP supplied kit but be aware, you may sacrifice some bandwidth.

I'd be interested in hearing about your experience as mine may be atypical.

Much the same as you - I lost some speed - but it is stable and has these extra features..
Perhaps the speed can be tweaked in the firmware a bit for a test release no?

We have already tried plenty of DMT codes on different firmwares, this is the best DMT code for this chipset.
