Trying to resolve adsl connection issues - Need suggestions.

Post by Grandpa79 »

I am posting here to get some feedback suggestions relating to issues I have been experiencing over the last few hours.

For the past hour my 7800N has been dropping connection to my ISP - No re-sync of the line is involved the internet light either goes dark or turns orange.

A) I logged into my ISP's customer management and for these disconnects it listed port-error but also Lost-Carrier I haven't seen this before any ideas?

B) I see LCP terminated by peer - What does this mean is it an issue at my end?

C) Also I see Chap Authentication failure - However with the same login details I am currently connected. Again is this an issue my end?

D) Also I have configured the ADSL connection as PPPoA with an MTU of 1432 - why am I seeing daemon pppd[3064]: Couldn't increase MTU to 1500. I would have thought I wouldn't see this message?

E) Also when I get disconnected I see daemon pppd[1796]: PPPoE: Terminating on signal 15. daemon pppd[1796]: Connection terminated. Again why would PPPoE be involved in terminating the connection?

Is the router misidentifying the equipment at the exchange as PPPoE?

I will be honest a majority of the router logs I don't really understand. But the LCP terminated by peer is new.

I have had issues on and off with my connection and been told I have a noisy line - I have never experienced this Noise in voice calls, if it exists it only seems to affect the broadband side of things. I have replaced the micro filters am plugged into the bt test socket on the master phone socket 24/7.

Any feedback is appreciated.

Just experienced the same drop in connection, the router remained synced no retrain of the line. The internet light went out then went to green or orange - eventually the connection is re established and alls well but eventually it happens again.

Again I see this in the logs.

daemon pppd[4506]: LCP terminated by peer
daemon pppd[4506]: LCP terminated by peer
daemon pppd[4506]: Clear IP addresses. Connection DOWN.
daemon pppd[4506]: Clear IP addresses.
daemon pppd[4506]: Couldn't increase MTU to 1500.
user syslog: begin: interface: ppp_0_0_38_1 go to down
user syslog: end: interface: ppp_0_0_38_1 go to down
daemon pppd[4506]: PPPoE: Terminating on signal 15.
daemon pppd[4506]: Connection terminated.
daemon pppd[4506]: Connect time 1721.5 minutes.

It then seems to loop thru throwing this - daemon pppd[4506]: LCP terminated by peer

Eventually throwing an authentication error

daemon pppd[4956]: PPP: Start to connect ...
daemon pppd[4956]: Using interface ppp0_0_38_1
daemon pppd[4956]: Connect: ppp_0_0_38_1 <-->
daemon pppd[4956]: Couldn't increase MTU to 1500.
daemon pppd[4956]: PPP LCP UP.
daemon pppd[4956]: Remote message: Authentication failure
daemon pppd[4956]: CHAP authentication failed
daemon pppd[4956]: Couldn't increase MTU to 1500.
daemon pppd[4956]: User name and password authentication failed.
daemon pppd[4956]: Connection terminated.

Then it connects fine, without any changes to the login details.

I had a recent issue with a stuck port at the exchange can any one suggest whether this is an issue with my equipment or something exchange side?

I just re entered all of my adsl connection details in the 7800 N and made sure to flash the info and restarted the router, I also replaced my micro filter and adsl cable, anything more I can do?

I have a support ticket open with my ISP and am waiting to update them I'd really like to rule out issues with the 7800 N.

Do you have an ISP supplied router you could try or would it be possible to borrow another router.

I don't understand the logs either and this may just as well be in Greek http://pptpclient.sourceforge.net/howto ... entication but if you scroll up to the top of the page you will see other errors as listed in your Logs - which may also be in "Greek". :)

No ISP supplied router - It got lost in the post many years ago and I never chased it up :/ I do have an old Draytek and a netgear which I may try if the problem persists.

I did hear back from my ISP and they don't feel it is an issue with my line and purely related to equipment at my end. Which actually makes me rather relieved.

I did have a stuck port at the exchange 24 aug to 27 aug - which resulted in 36 hours with no dsl signal at all, this was fixed and the dsl signal
returned and router synced.

I have only experienced the issue in the post since that was resolved so was wondering if it was in any way related. I have used the 7800 N on this line/this ISP in the past with none of these issues. The connection closed by peer and authentication error is a new problem.

Its odd as it works fine, it connects with no issues at all but the last 2 or 3 days the connection drops then it throws an authentication error then its fine again - I'm thinking user error on my part in some way so will see how I get on - From what I read via google it may be related to work/maintenance at local exchange or somewhere along the line. Guess it is a waiting game.

Haha thanks for that link I will look through it and understand very little :D

Normally when BT are playing around it would normally result in a resync rather than just the Internet dropping but I would think billion_fan will have a better take on those errors and perhaps we'll both learn something. :)

It could be worth sticking one of those other routers on just for elimination purposes.

If you are getting authentication error it could be something on the ISP side, as I assume the username and password is not altered, so its very strange that one minute will not authenticate and the next it will pass authentication.

I don't think the issue is on your side. (the issue has not been reported on the 7800N before)

Hi

Yeah the authentication error is what confused me, as one minute the connection is working fine and then I will stop getting ping replies and eventually the connection will drop - then I see the closed by peer and eventually an authentication error, and then it connects again..

Earlier today I had a similar period where I stopped receiving ping requests/replies on and off over a 10 minute period and then the connection recovered without dropping or anything similar reported in the router log.

Also I got a response from my ISP to say it didn't indicate a problem with the line but would indicate a problem with my equipment (router I guess) and as it is my equipment it is out of their hands (fair enough). (well it was something along those lines)

Can you say 100 % what this recorded in the router logs means --> LCP terminated by peer.

Could an error in the ADSL profile say a mismatch in modulation or authentication settings cause this? I have been told I have a noisy line could this be responsible for what I am seeing?

Thanks again for the replies.

Unfortunately the router can't tell you why the connection is dropped other then daemon pppd[4506]: LCP terminated by peer, which means its dropping the PPP connection.

Something to try is setting your protocol to PPPOE, and the encap method to LLC (use the basic >> WAN option) and click on 'Apply' the device will reboot, once rebooted monitor the connection.

The router should not drop the PPP connection, (as it looks like a ISP issue, as the line is stable (DLS light not blinking) just dropping the PPP connection)

Also I noticed LCP: timeout sending Config-Requests , meaning the router is sending config request to the exchange, and it hasn't replied to the requests (the ISP should be able to adjust the LCP echo to sort that out)

Would I still connect with the protocol set to PPPOE - The setup info from ISP lists a Protocol PPPOA 0/38, Encap Method vc mux.

I will give it a go tho thx.

And I will contact my ISP about the LCP echo.

Just experienced another drop but again no re-sync of the line, router reported no response after 6 echo requests then the connection dropped but then was re established instantly.

I have just changed the ADSL port to the PPPOE settings you suggested in your previous post and after the reboot it connected just fine.
I have set up router stats lite and am monitoring Noise margin on down and up stream to see if there is any burst of noise, although if it was down to noise I would have thought it would cause a re-sync/retrain.

I have also set the modulation to ADSL2 just to see if it makes any difference, would limiting the connection to ADSL 2 as oppose to ADSL 2+ generate different line stats regards sync speed and SNR? (if someone out there could answer this question that would be awesome)

The billion was recommended as its a broadcom chipset and works well with the equipment at the exchange/ISP or whatever it's odd as I don't remember experiencing drops as frequently in the past, the only thing I have left to try is another router I have a draytek 2710 but will have to update firmware *Sigh* and I could never get UPnP working with games consoles on the draytek.

I'm not really sure where to go next with this I guess Fibre haha. I was really hoping the whole "stuck port at the exchange" issue would resolve any line issues I have no idea how to rule things out of figuring out just what is going on with the connection.

Thanks
