8800AXL r2 configured by ISP works OK, but I cannot access the configuration pages

Post by AngusR »

I can "ping" the new router, thus:

"Pinging 192.168.1.254 with 32 bytes of data:
Reply from 192.168.1.254: bytes=32 time<1ms TTL=64
Reply from 192.168.1.254: bytes=32 time<1ms TTL=64
Reply from 192.168.1.254: bytes=32 time<1ms TTL=64
Reply from 192.168.1.254: bytes=32 time<1ms TTL=64
Ping statistics for 192.168.1.254:
Packets: Sent = 4, Received = 4, Lost = 0 (0% loss),
Approximate round trip times in milli-seconds:
Minimum = 0ms, Maximum = 0ms, Average = 0ms"

But I cannot access the configuration pages, using Firefox or Opera on Windows XP, Microsoft Edge on Windows 10, or the Experimental Browser on a Kindle Paperwhite e-book reader. For example, the error message I get with Firefox is:

"Unable to connect
Firefox can't establish a connection to the server at 192.168.1.254."

Almost certainly I'm doing something stupid, but what might it be that I'm doing wrong, and what can I do to put it right?

(I've asked the ISP to supply me with configuration instructions, in case I have to do a factory reset.)

If you get a ping reply from the router it means its up and running, are you sure you haven't changed the web management port eg http://192.168.1.254:8080 (8080 being the new web management port)

If all fails unplug all Ethernet connections from the router, and leave 1 PC connected to the router, then reboot it and see if you can login.

If that fails then a factory reset is the only option

I believe that IDNet used to preconfigure there routers to use port 8888
so you could try http://192.168.1.254:8888
a long shot but it may work

failing that download and use a port scanner to scan all open ports on address 192.168.1.254
But you will still need the routers login details and that would presumably be pre configured by your ISP as well.

That may have been a long shot, but it was also a bull's-eye! :D

I can access http://192.168.1.254:8888/.

I'll follow up again if anything else goes wrong, but this looks like being OK now.

Thank you very much!

... I spoke a little too soon! I do get the login screen now, and that is great progress; but although I have tried several times now to log in, using the default user name and password, on the first attempt, I got a message saying something like "Session Expired", and on every subsequent attempt, I got the same "Authentication Required" prompt, followed eventually by:

"401 Unauthorized
Authorization required."

It looks as if not only have IDNet used port 8888, without telling me, but they have also changed the default user name and/or password, also without telling me. Or else, of course, I'm still doing something stupid! Either way, I shall have to try contacting them again, to see if this can be sorted out. It certainly doesn't seem to be any kind of problem with the router itself.

It turns out that they had configured it with the default user name ('admin') and my IDNet customer password. (I feel a bit silly, for not even thinking that they might have done that, but they should have told me!)

At first, even with that information, I still couldn't log in; but they logged into the router remotely, and asked me to try again.

Even then, I still couldn't log in! They suggested trying another browser, in case Firefox's cache was causing problems.

Fortunately, I was then able to log in on my first attempt with Opera.

I went back to Firefox, and was able to view the configuration page, without being asked to log in again (and without having to clear the cache).

For all I know, there may be further twists and turns still to come, but it's all making more sense now, and starting to look really hopeful.

Thank you again!
