Slow broadband speed BT

Post by Mazharq »

Hi,

I after reading a lot of reviews about Billion I decided to buy one to replace my BT HUB3. The hub3 used to give me a good broadband speed, but the issue was it would stop working after a few days and I would need to restart it.

I have now received my billion last week and I have set it up. I get very good broadband performance from it for a few minutes about 7mb and ping is 40ms when doing a speed test. However after approx 9-12 minutes later the broadband performance just drops down to 0.16mb ping 1120ms

xDSL
Mode ADSL_G.dmt
Traffic Type ATM
Status Up
Link Power State L0

Downstream Upstream
Line Coding (Trellis) On On
SNR Margin (dB) 11.2 26.0
Attenuation (dB) 17.5 12.5
Output Power (dBm) 19.7 12.2
Attainable Rate (Kbps) 12008 1280

Rate (Kbps) 8128 448

I have played around with various setting including SNR, and just don’t seem to being getting the performance i used to get with my BT Hub 3

Please could someone help or point me in the right direction as at the moment the broadband is unusable.

Unfortunately you're on the worst possible service that BT offer.

There's very little that you or the Billion can do to improve things as this particular service suffers from very poor performance during peak times caused by congestion.

When BT upgrade your exchange to 21CN , or you switch to another ISP with their own equipment in the exchange, then you'll get a much better service as you're clearly fairly close to your exchange.

You can also test your speeds with the following website http://speedtest.btwholesale.com, this should point out any problems with your line (if there is any issues on your line), it should also give you some ammo, so you can inform you ISP of this issue

The issue you have reported is everywhere on the internet with different brands of routers and different ISP's. (some examples below)

Hi,

I'm in a rural area of Yorkshire and get a max of 6.8M down, .5M up, 44ms ping. Which is about as good as I am ever going to get on the old BT copper network. BT is the only provider in my area outside of 3G. I looked at Satellite but it's a no-go for applications like VOIP.

It might be worth checking the following, if you have not done so already:

1. Check you are plugged into the BT master socket
2. Check you have microfilters on all other sockets
3. It might take a few days for the line to settle down with the Billion - give it at least 1 day to see. My line goes nuts if I reboot and then it has to re-sync which can take a few hours or even a day as the exchange end of this adjusts.
4. Call BT and see if you can get them to look at this if you are getting way under the speed you think you should get (but, don't hold your breath with this one). I actually had an old BT master plug that was incorrectly wired into the house (by BT), after 10 weeks of fighting with them an Engineer came out and fitted a new Master socket one and that double my speeds. They try to charge for this, and you have to fight to get it for free.

Hope you get it sorted.

Hi,

BT have been on site recently and installed a new faceplate and have checked all the wiring also. My IP profile is now set 7.15mnps
I have re-connected my BT HUB 3 and have done some Speed test results below

BT HUB 3
Time 16:34
Download Speed = 7.14mbps
Upload Speed = 0.17mbps
Ping Latency = 100.75ms

Time 16:54
Download Speed = 7.16mbps
Upload Speed = 0.18mbps
Ping Latency = 92.25ms

When the BT Hub is connected performance is stable even after 15-20 mins. But when I re-connect my Billion the performance just after a few mins is just not acceptable.

Billion 7800DXL
Time 16:58
Download Speed = 7.09mbps
Upload Speed = 0.33mbps
Ping Latency = 45.88ms

Time 17:07
Download Speed = 2.05mbps
Upload Speed = 0.26mbps
Ping Latency = 426.50ms

Why would there be so much of a difference between the BT HUB and Billion and connection speed and Ping latency.

When the download speeds drop to 2.05mbps which is a improvement from your last post, does the sync speed change also??
