7800DXL Prioritise transmission of small packets?

Post by aesmith »

Hi,

On 20CN ADSL the uplink speed is only 400k at best so easy to saturate with uploads, whether deliberate or via Google Drive synch, Icloud etc going on in the background. When the upload is maxed out it brings any sort of download to it's knees, as it's upstream ACK packets get lost or delayed in the bottleneck.

With other routers I've found an easy fix by setting a priority for small packets in the upload direction. I used a size of 250 bytes as the threshold, but there's no need for very fine distinction because upload data packets will tend to be near to maximum size of 1500, and the ACKs will be pretty much minimum TCP size. That simple policy also works to prioritise IP voice media, since the media (RTP) packets are less than that size. (SIP signalling includes some very large packets so needs to be separately managed).

Is there a way with the Billion to set priority based on packet size? I haven't been able to find one, but thought it worth asking.

Thanks, Tony S
